West Hendred

West Hendred lies at the foot of the Berkshire Downs just off the A417, about 3 miles east of Wantage. The village is probably most well known locally as being the home of The Hare, the white boarded public house on the A417. But turn off the main road opposite The Hare and you enter the village. It is a straggly village, stretching from the main road right up on to the downs, with no real centre.

The village's parish church, Holy Trinity, is on the edge of the village. We don't know whether Holy Trinity Church is as well known as The Hare, but it is a delightful little church, built between 1300 and 1350 and the remains of wall paintings can be seen above the chancel arch.
