EAST CHALLOW

                Approaching from Wantage East
Challow runs down the hill towards where
the old Wilts and Berks Canal used to pass under the road.
The village looks attractive as the road passes through wide
grassy verges with houses set well back

                The
Wilts and Berks Canal used to run from Trowbridge to Abingdon
and it is being gradually restored by the Wilts
and Berks Canal Trust. Unfortunately there
is no sign of this work in East Challow, in fact parts
of the canal have disappeared from view completely. Next
to the canal is a small industrial area on the site of
what used to be a foundry, and before that an old coaching
                inn.
              The
village church is the Church of St. Nicholas. For the history and full information about St. Nicholas' Church click here.
              Opposite
the church is a small green with some of the oldest cottages
in the village and a defunct village pump.
              The
village pub, the Goodlake Arms, is named after a local benefactor.
              East
Challow is about 1.5 miles west of Wantage
                on the A417.
